Spotlight on the Marble Mountains, Vietnam

Writer's picture: Nick and ElenNick and Elen

Located in central Vietnam, less than 10km away from Da Nang city, are the Marble Mountains; a cluster of five limestone and marble hills, each named after an element of the Chinese yin-yang philosophy : metal, water, wood, fire and earth. According to the legend, the hills were formed by the eggshells of an egg laid in the area by a dragon, so no wonder why this place is among the most mysterious and magical ones we've ever been to! Both on top but also in between and inside the hills, numerous temples, statues, shrines, caves, tunnels and sites of worship are waiting to be explored, turning the Marble Mountains into a real life treasure hunt game.

There are plenty of ways to get to the Marble Mountains from either Hoi An or Da Nang city, including taxi and bus rides, tours organized by travel agencies and rental motorbikes. To go up Mt Thuy (the Water Mountain) you can either use the stairs (156 steps) or the elevator for 0.55€. The entrance fee is less than 1.50€ per person.

Once you go up and start exploring expect plenty of uneven steps, hidden trails, some climbing opportunities and no shortage of beautiful, panoramic views of the area. Make sure to wear good shoes, beware of the slippery steps and have some extra snacks and water packed. If you're visiting on a sunny day, wearing a hat and some sunscreen will be a life saver!

Here's a sneak peek of what to expect from the Marble Mountains!

As you have already guessed by the pictures, we can only recommend including the Marble Mountains to your itinerary, as it is one of the best day trip options from either Da Nang or Hoi An!
