Earlier this year we visitedTallinn, the Estonian capital and got to spend one full day exploring it. Tallinn is home to less than half a million inhabitants and it's well known for its medieval atmosphere and cute alleyways, which will transfer you back in time. Thanks to its small size, Tallinn can be seen within a few hours and many tourists choose it as a daytrip destination from nearby Helsinki, which is only a short ferry ride away.
The first postcards come all the way from Tallinn's heart, Raekoja Platz. This is where your explorations will most probably begin from and where you'll get a first glimpse of the city's vibes. When we visited, there was a flea market with all kinds of stalls, where medieval dressed vendors were selling their goods.
Another famous spot in Tallin is St Catherine's passage, which is said to be the city's oldest street! It is excellently preserved and it's home to some of the cutest craft workshops in town, selling everything from handmade ceramincs and hats to glassware and jwellery.
One of our favourite buildings in the city was definitely St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, located atop Toompea Hill. Built in 1900, the church was dedicated to the Prince of Novgorod, Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky, and was originally intended as a religious and political symbol of the tsarist empire. Nowadays, it's one of the city's architectural gems and is home to Tallinn's largest bell ensemble, consisting of 11 bells.
Apart from wandering through Tallinn's streets, enjoying this sweet Baltic capital from above is another must do! Two of the city's most popular viewpoints are Patkuli and Kohtuosa Viewing Platforms. The both offer beautiful views of the city and are located pretty close to each other.
All in all, we found Tallinn to be one of the cutest cities we've ever visited and we can only recommend it as a weekend or daytrip getaway, depending on where you live. Oh, and when it comes to food and coffee, make sure to start your day with a delicious breakfast at Ruki's , to be followed by medieval snacks at Il Draakon and don't forget to head to Raru Talu Sokolaad if you have a sweet tooth!
